Congratulations to GIMSPP Students Elizabeth Nguyen and Shivani Mehta!
Most summers we host medical students in our office for a rotation to expose them to internal medicine practice in a community setting (as opposed to academic medical center). We do this as a part of the Texas General Internal Medicine Statewide Preceptorship Program (GIMSPP) which is managed by the Texas Chapter of the American College of Physicians. The students come for medical schools across the state and spend between three and six weeks in our office seeing patients.
We will have two new students in the office starting next week. Many of you have met medical students over the years in our office and we always appreciate your taking the time to help us teach them!
In the summer of 2016, Elizabeth Nguyen and Shivani Mehta (both students at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth) worked with us and while here, they worked to publish a journal article discussing our strategy for colon cancer screening. Publishing an article in a peer-reviewed medical journal is a significant undertaking and a huge accomplishment for medical students and practicing physicians. We are very excited to congratulate Elizabeth and Shivani on the recent publication of the manuscript they wrote with us last summer and we wish them the best in their future careers!
For those of you interested in reading the article, it is attached here. For those few of our patients who have not yet had colonoscopy screening, we will continue to chase you; hopefully the article will help us communicate how important this is! We also would like to thank Drs. Edling, Bolin, Levitan, Park, Vanesko, Tsiakos and the other gastroenterology subspecialists to who we refer - this definitely a team sport.
On a related note, the state funding for the GIMSPP program has been inconsistent and there have been years when students wanted to participate, but for which there were no student stipends available. We have helped to establish a foundation to try to eliminate these funding gaps. Click here for additional information, we appreciate your support!
